Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Although cumulative Cadillac sales saw a significant drop of 48 percent in Q4 2021, sales of the Cadillac Escalade tell a very different story, as full-size luxury SUVs completely dominate the segment in the United States. With 9,664 shipments during the fourth quarter of 2021 (up 2.2 percent year-on-year), the Escalade outsold all of its direct rivals combined. The Lincoln Navigator came in second as sales fell 33 percent to 3,384 shipments, while the Infiniti QX80 came in third as sales jumped 80 percent to 2,898 units. The newest segment competitor, the Grand Wagoneer, took fourth place with 2,585 units sold, and the Lexus LX took last place with 755 shipments as sales slumped 54 percent.

For the sake of reference, below we include the sales figures for the full-size luxury crossover. While they differ mechanically from the aforementioned body-on-frame SUVs by having a unibody construction, they are usually cross-shopped and considered an alternative. Currently, the only full-size luxury crossovers are the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and the new BMW X7, although Audi is rumored to be working on a Q9 in the future.

Cadillac Society Take

Showing a small increase of 2.22 percent, the Cadillac Escalade sold more than all its competitors during Q4 2021. We attribute this strong performance to continued interest in the all-new fifth-generation Escalade, which has been completely overhauled (redesigned and reengineered). ) for the 2021 model year. However, thanks to the ongoing global shortage of microchips, dealer-level supplies continue to be very limited, suggesting that sales volume may be even higher under normal circumstances.

Considering that the Cadillac Escalade continues to obliterate the full-size luxury SUV segment in terms of sales volume, it can be said that it is one of the most coveted vehicles on the market. This is especially evident from the lack of discounts and incentives offered for the model, which suggests that Cadillac sees no need to incentivize buyers to consider the luxury SUV. In other words, they will most likely buy it, no matter the price tag.

It should be noted that Cadillac chose to reduce production of the other vehicles in its line, namely the CT4 and CT5, saving on the limited supply of microchips to facilitate continued production of the highly profitable Escalade. The shortage of microchips is not expected to subside until mid to late 2022. However, when that happens, we expect sales of the Cadillac Escalade to continue their segment-leading momentum. In addition, we expect the introduction of the high-performance Cadillac Escalade-V for the 2023 model year will further increase sales.

That said, the competition is not standing still. In fact, the segment’s newest entry – the Jeep Grand Wagoneer – accounted for a negligible 2,585 deliveries, resulting in a slight decline in the Escalade segment’s share. We believe that Jeep sales volume will decline over time as initial demand is met, and Escalade availability increases.
