Supercharged First Generation Acura NSX Sounds Like Heaven On Autobahn

The Acura (or Honda, depending on the market) NSX was the iconic supercar of the 1990s. At 270 horsepower (201 kilowatts) and 210 pound-feet (285 Newton-meters), this car is not very powerful by modern car performance standards. The one in this video solves that problem by pairing a supercharger to the 3.0-liter V6. Forced induction pushes output to a claimed 395 hp (294 kW or 400 metric hp) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). Let’s see what this machine can do on the Autobahn in this video.

At low speeds, this NSX sounds pretty tame. There is a slight rumble from the exhaust but nothing to suggest that the output has gone up by around 125 hp (93 kW). At 37 miles per hour (60 kilometers per hour), you can start to hear the whine from the supercharger. It gets louder as the spin goes up.

Drivers seem to be getting a kick from the way this NSX accelerates. He slowed down a few times, so he could hit the gas and do another run.

Unfortunately, we never saw the NSX reach its maximum speed. The driver reached about 150 mph (241 kph) and then took off. Judging from the way the car accelerates, supercharged vehicles can go a little faster.

The end of the video came suddenly. The driver slides the camera to show the fuel gauge showing an almost empty tank.

NSX is currently preparing for its second retirement from the market. The 350 Type S units are the latest example of the second generation model. Acura made sure the supercar came out fast by increasing output to 600 hp (447 kW) and 492 pound-feet (667 Nm) of torque. The nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox boosts 50 percent faster and can go through gears when downshifting.

The Type S is available with a Light Package which includes carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon fiber engine covers and carbon interior trim. With these pieces, the car weighs 57.8 pounds (26.2 kilograms).

In 2021, Acura executive Jon Ikeda says there will be a third-generation NSX. He strongly hinted that it would be an EV but didn’t offer any specifics. Since then, we haven’t heard anything about the new model.
