Did you happen to see footage from the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed? While full of incredible bikes and cars every year, 2022 is especially special as Wayne Rainey and his 1992 championship winner Yamaha YZR500 make their first appearance at the event.
It Living MotoGP legends do demonstration laps on that fantastic bicycle—flanked by the likes of Kenny Roberts, Kevin Schwantz, and Mick Doohan. Don’t worry if you missed it—it’s 2022, and of course there’s a video of this historic moment that you can watch whenever you want. (You’ll want to watch them, though; seeing and hearing the bikes is the next best thing to being there in person.)
The four racing legends shared 12 World Championships between them. Sit down for a moment and take it, because it’s a pretty amazing thing to behold. Thankfully, once the lap was over, and the racers had parked their bikes at Goodwood House, we also got to see a great interview with the four of them, chatting with the crowd below about the experience.
What did Rainey think of his first Goodwood Festival of Speed experience? When asked in the interview if he would consider returning to the show in the future, Rainey said he loved every minute and he would never leave. The other drivers also seemed genuinely happy and touched by the opportunity to be a part of something so special.
It’s been nearly 30 years since the fateful 1993 Italian Grand Prix crash in which Rainey ended up becoming incapacitated. Motorcycles are an ingrained part of who Rainey is, and his love for it has definitely never left him. (I mean, you don’t start and run the MotoAmerica racing series if you don’t like motorcycle racing. Period.)
It makes it a very special and moving experience for motorcycle racing fans to see Rainey back there. Whether you watched the glory days of the two-step championship or not, the excitement you can see as these four parade around Goodwood and then have a good chat afterwards is absolutely brilliant.
