The photographers featured in this video may have thought they were at a safe distance from the racing action. Dangerous places are always just around the corner, but this wild video offers two lessons for people who enjoy taking close-up photos at racing events. There is always a scout with you, and always expect the unexpected. Even when you are standing on a hill in the middle of a straight road.
The accident occurred in April at Pöllauberg Hillclimb 2022, which is north of Pöllauberg in the southeastern region of Austria. The annual event sees various competitors tackle the 1.24-mile stage, which sees a modest 328-foot climb from start to finish. The video above from Motorsportvideos Luky M. on YouTube captures the final straight line before the finish, and according to the comments on the video, neither the driver nor the viewer were injured in the crash.
The same can’t be said for the KTM X-Bow GTX, which loses its entire front clip at close range. Dominik Olbert got into the final left hander a bit too hot, causing the rear end to pop out a bit on the exit of the corner. The right rear tire went into the grass and at that point, control was lost. The KTM sailed off course at a nearly 90-degree angle, crashing into a deep ditch head-on. The impact makes the car spin as the front is crushed, which also sends parts flying in all directions.
Despite being a few feet from the hillside road, the photographers began to scatter as the momentum carried the completely damaged X-Bow right where several people were standing. He stopped maybe 50 feet from the finish line, stopping right in front of a parked car.
Olbert’s Instagram account showed the X-Bow racing at a recent endurance event, though it’s unclear if it’s the same car being remade or a different car. Anyway, we’re glad to see that all is well and that he’s back in the saddle after a scary crash.
