Mercedes-AMG One Production Version Teased Ahead Of June 1 Debut

Believing the hype as Mercedes-AMG will soon unveil the One hypercar in production guise. The Project One concept debuted back in September 2017 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and after several delays caused by development bottlenecks, the F1-engined road car is finally ready for prime time. Both AMG’s road car division and its F1 arm took to social media to announce the world premiere will take place on Wednesday, June 1.

Between the IAA reveal and now, we’ve seen its fair share of spy shots suggesting the final version will stay true to the concept car, but with a few aerodynamic tweaks. The Mercedes CEO recently joked about the “drunk” head honchos when they gave the green light to Formula 1 cars for the road. In October 2021, the folks from Affalterbach confirmed the electrified hypercar would go into production in mid-2022, and it looks like the One will come after another F1-influenced engine, the Aston Martin Valkyrie.

Limited to 275 units, the spiritual successor to the CLK GTR has long sold out for around $2.7 million a pop. It will use a turbocharged 1.6 liter engine adapted from the F1, combined with no less than four electric motors for a grand total of over 1,000 horsepower. It will be the most powerful Mercedes road car ever and with the highest revs engine as the V6 will spin up to 11,000 rpm. One of the main problems during development was to lower the engine idle speed from 5,000 rpm to 1,200 rpm to comply with regulations.

The all-wheel-drive beast has to do 0 to 124 mph (200 km/h) in under six seconds and hit over 217 mph (350 km/h) to echo Project One. The latter is said to have an electric range of 25 kilometers (15.5 miles). As you may have heard, the turbo-electric combustion engine had to be rebuilt after only 50,000 kilometers (about 31,000 miles).

Few will remember the bold statement made by former AMG boss Tobias Moers in September 2018 when he said the One could improve the lap times of the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo around the Nürburgring. The race car from Zuffenhausen finished the Nordschleife in 5 minutes 19.55 seconds, and beating it with a number plated vehicle would be incredible.

Even if it wasn’t faster, one could say the car production record would soon be dropping. Everyone expected the AMG One (and Valkyrie) to slash a lot of seconds off the 6:43:30 lap time achieved by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with the Manthey Performance Kit.
