Prodrive Previews Its Reborn Subaru Impreza Rally Car With Over 400 HP

The Prodrive P25 celebrates the brand’s successful relationship with Subaru in the 1990s by creating a street legal model with inspiration from the 1997 Impreza World Rally Car and the 22B. That year, Subie won the WRC factory championship and his driver Colin McRae was second in the drivers’ standings.

The P25 uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four engine that produces over 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts). Power is channeled through a six-speed semi-automatic gearbox with paddle shifters behind the wheel. Prodrive says this model uses carbon fiber extensively to keep the weight down.

Prodrive P25 teaser

The teaser sketch depicts the Impreza with a mix of influences. The large, low-mounted fog lamps are from the 22B. The aerodynamic side mirrors are similar to those in rally cars. Based on the images, the front fender flares are more aggressive than the original model. It rides on multi-spoke Prodrive-branded wheels, rather than the original bronze-toned look.

There is no indication as to what the P25’s interior will look like.

Prodrive’s announcement says the P25 has a “light chassis.” It’s unclear whether the company took the original Impreza and modified it or built the entire vehicle from scratch.

Several people who worked on the ’97 rally car contributed to the P25. Peter Stevens, who wrote the original, “defined the design” of the new model, according to Prodrive. David Lapworth, the firm’s technical director, did engineering for both.

“The original Impreza 22B is considered Subarus’ most iconic and highly sought after. We wanted to enhance everything that makes the car so special by applying the latest technologies to create our own modern interpretation of a car that occupies a place in automotive history,” said the Prodrive chairman, David Richards.

Prodrive will create only 25 P25 instances. The model will make its physical debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June. The company received a statement of interest for the current model and plans to ship the first one before the end of the year. No pricing details available at this time.
