New spy shots have caught the next-generation Audi A4 Avant performing brake tests in the Austrian Alps. New photos show Audi continuing to hide the wagon under a full-body camouflage wrap, but as we neared its launch, we began to learn more potential details about the new model.
The new A4 will likely arrive with a modified version of the MLB platform that underpins other VW Group models. Audi modified it to accommodate an electric motor, as the new A4 will come with the assistance of a mild hybrid. However, rumors also suggest the automaker is using the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder EA888 petrol engine in a model that will get a major upgrade. It will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Audi will offer in the A4 a variety of petrol and diesel engines, but we will also see it electrified. That includes plug-in hybrids and full-electric variants. There are rumors of a hybrid RS4 that will produce far more than the current model’s 444 hp (331 kW).
According to our spy photographer, the all-electric A4 E-Tron will use the PPE platform instead of the MLB, and the EV will feature unique front-end styling, such as a closed grille. It will come in single and dual motor configurations, with the RS variant supposedly producing 475 horsepower (354 kilowatts) and 590 pound-feet (800 Newton-meters) of torque.
While there may be some big surprises hidden under the hood, the exterior of the car won’t be too surprising when Audi reveals them. The camouflage hides many design details, and the overall styling features some significant changes compared to the current car. The whole face looks narrower, including the grille and headlights. At the rear, Audi has installed stand-in taillights, although there isn’t much excitement here.
Audi has yet to set a debut date for the new A4, which will arrive in both Avant and sedan body styles. However, we expect the reveal to happen later this year or early next year as the car will go on sale sometime in 2023. Audi is pushing to become a fully electric brand, but petrol engines have a place in its lineup for a few more years. For now, the rumors look interesting, but nothing is official yet.
