2023 Cadillac Lyriq Pre-Production Begins In China

The new battery electric Cadillac Lyriq has started pre-production at Cadillac’s Jinqiao China plant in Shanghai, China.

Cadillac announced that the first pre-production Lyriq recently rolled off the assembly line in China, starting the final stages of the electric luxury crossover’s journey to consumers in Asia and the world’s largest auto market. Initially, Cadillac China’s parent company, SAIC-GM, said that the Lyriq would be the first vehicle to be assembled at the Ultium Center plant, a new facility also located in Shanghai. However, plans to manufacture Lyriq at the Jinqiao factory appear to have superseded the initial arrangement.

“I want to thank the team for doing an excellent job of reaching this important milestone during this critical time. This is a strong testament to our world-class manufacturing,” Cadillac’s vice president in China, Chris Biggs, said in a statement. “Today brings us one step closer to enabling our customers to enjoy the industry-leading EV technology and luxury experiences that only Cadillac can offer.”

The pre-production Cadillac Lyriq shows that the crossover is ready to undergo its final testing phase (known as final validation) before mass production for the Chinese market. This will include reliability evaluation and validation of local features such as the onboard infotainment system and Super Cruise semi-autonomous technology to ensure performance is up to par. Then, regular production of Lyriq will soon follow in the next few weeks. Shipments and sales of the Cadillac Lyriq in China are expected to begin in early July.

As for the North American market, the Cadillac Lyriq 2023 began production at the Spring Hill plant in Tennessee in late March. Interestingly, Cadillac was expected to launch the new electric crossover in China before bringing it to North America, but the ongoing global shortage of microchips is changing the supply chain environment, forcing the luxury marque to change plans.
