Honda is expanding its European lineup with the official announcement of the all-new ZR-V SUV. The high-riding model enters the European market in 2023 and occupies a position between the HR-V and CR-V in the brand portfolio. Here’s what we know about the new crossover for now.
Actually not much, because for now Honda does not want to reveal additional details regarding this new moniker. The only information available at this time is that the ZR-V uses a hybrid powertrain and will be joined by the next-generation HR-V and CR-V, both featuring an electric engine under the hood.
The new ZR-V is part of Honda’s strategy to overhaul its European lineup with hybrid models. The SUV joins the new Civic e:HEV which will go on sale on the Old continent in the third quarter of this year. It will be interesting to see if the ZR-V will use the HR-V hybrid powertrain or a more powerful hybrid of the electrified Civic. We put our money on the latter because the ZR-V is reportedly based on the Civic.
Our partner from Motor1.com Spain photo obtained (see below) of the ZR-V for China and the version for Europe will probably be very similar to its Chinese sibling. In the People’s Republic, the crossover will be sold exclusively with a non-hybrid 1.5-liter turbo engine mated to a CVT. This model will be produced by GAC-Honda. The Z in the model name stems from Honda’s desire to meet “Generation Z’s mobility needs and break the paradigm of seeking new experiences.”

With the launch of the ZR-V in Europe, Honda will only have one model without electrification. The upcoming new Civic Type R will be the continent’s last pure combustion powered vehicle, where it will sport a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with over 300 horsepower.
It’s also worth noting that Honda is currently working on its next-generation CR-V, which is slated to go on sale in Europe next year with a range of hybrid engines, most likely including a plug-in hybrid as well.
