The European MPV segment lost another model as Renault discontinued the Scenic. The French company no longer offers compact family vans in Europe, a name that dates back to 1996 when the first generation Scenic debuted.
While the original Scenic sold over 2.8 million units over its life cycle, its modern successor never got the attention it deserved with just 20,678 sales last year. About a decade ago, in 2011, Renault sold 160,159 Scenics on the Old continent of the new third generation model.

The French automaker is not taking orders for the Scenic, though it’s important to note that its seven-seater sibling – the Grand Scenic – is still on sale. Based on CaradisiakHowever, the end of production of three-line multipurpose vehicles will come in just a few months.
The Scenic joins the Talisman, Renault’s flagship sedan, which was also discontinued recently. The rise of SUVs and the decline in demand for traditional sedans, wagons and vans forced manufacturers to discontinue some older models. Espace’s fortunes do not appear to be any different in that it is no longer available for order in certain European markets, although an official announcement of its demise has yet to be released.
Just last month, Citroen, one of Renault’s historical rivals, revoked the Grand C4 SpaceTourer family van with production slated to end in July this year. Much like Renault, Citroen has been selling multi-purpose vehicles for decades starting in 1994 when the Evasion was introduced. It was replaced by the larger and more comfortable C8, which was discontinued in 2012.
The Volkswagen Sharan, a similar-sized MPV from Wolfsburg also sold as the SEAT Alhambra, was canceled in 2020. It seems that Ford is currently one of the few manufacturers in Europe with an available minivan, the S-Max, to get a new model. hybrid powertrain in February last year.
