Ford Taurus Still Lives, Gets A Hefty Makeover For Middle East Market

The Ford Taurus 2023 marks the eighth generation of Ford’s old sedan, although you won’t see it in the United States. In this neck of the woods, Taurus dies with second death in 2019, has been resurrected in 2008. Meanwhile, the Mondeo-based Taurus arrived in China for 2016, and now there’s a new model set to grace China and the Middle East, where Ford says the sedan is a very strong seller.

What kind of kit does the new Taurus offer? There’s a minimalist digital cockpit inside, with an 8-inch instrument screen with a 13.2-inch center screen. A panoramic roof and wireless charging are available, as are driver assistance such as adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation system and blind spot intervention. Apple Car Play and Android Auto are also part of the package, and Ford makes a point of mentioning the play dial on the center console.

On the outside, it still has the feel of a Mondeo in the form of a sedan, but it looks modern with high narrow headlamps on the fascia flanking the wide grille. At the rear, there are narrow three-spoke taillights that bear an odd resemblance to something you’d find on a Mustang. The lights are connected by a single LED strip that covers the decklid. Under the hood is Ford’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. And to make sure it copes with the desert heat of the Middle East, Ford says the new Taurus has been thoroughly tested.

“It is critical to the comfort of our customers, and the integrity of the new Taurus, which we tested in such extreme climates,” said Ziyad Dallalah, general manager of production development for Ford International Markets Group. “Dust and grit can damage the inside of the engine and suspension components by accelerating wear and tear on moving parts. Add that to searing heat, and you’re faced with a vehicle that has to work harder than it might have done under more favorable conditions. Our testing ensures the Taurus engine, transmission, driveline and cooling system can handle the demands of the region.”

The Ford Taurus was originally launched in 1986 and soon became the best-selling passenger car in the United States. The Taurus 2023, however, will remain the domain of the market outside the US, with sales in the Middle East expected to begin later this year.
