The GMC Canyon AT4X will be a tougher version of the brand’s midsize pickup. We’re now seeing the first teaser for a more ruthless model ahead of her full debut this summer.
The teaser image only lets us see the bottom of the Canyon AT4X. Compared to the standard AT4, this one has additional cladding around the wheel holes and rides on 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels. Looks like the suspension might be a little higher too.
A spy video offers a look at what the testing of the Canyon AT4X might be. It appears to have a revised front bumper to provide a better approach angle. The development team hid the rear suspension. Speculation suggests the truck will have a DSSV Multimatic spool-valve damper – a feature already on the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.
The powertrain for the Canyon AT4X remains a mystery. There are rumors that it could be a 2.7-liter L3B turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 325 horsepower (242 kilowatts) and 380 pound-feet (515 Newton-meters) of torque. Supposedly there will be no diesel engine option. We have no info on transmission options at this time.
The Canyon AT4X is expected to only be available in one body style. Buyers can only get it with a crew cabin layout.
The AT4X trim debuts on the 2022 GMC Sierra. On larger trucks, the rugged model has mechanical enhancements such as a revised suspension that improves wheel travel, DSSV Multimatic spool valve dampers, locking differentials for both axles, larger transfer box guards, and a Terrain driving mode that allows for one pedal control at a time. at 4-Low. There are also rumors that GMC is introducing a Sierra HD grade AT4X pickup. It would follow a similar recipe for receiving parts to make the truck more off-road capable. This reportedly includes an updated suspension, locking differences, larger skid plates, and a revised bumper for better mileage.
