’74 Chevy Camaro Z/28 Found At Bottom Of Lake In ME: Video

We’ve seen many instances where a classic Chevy Camaro has been towed out of a yard or out of storage. But dredged from the bottom of the lake? That’s a little rarer.

In a new report, CBS 13 News highlights a mystery in Maine after underwater explorers discovered a 1974 Chevy Camaro Z/28 sunken deep beneath the surface of Sebago Lake. The vehicle was found about 55 feet underwater in the channel between Frye Island and the mainland, an area known for heavy boat traffic.

The 1974 Chevy Camaro was found at the bottom of the lake.

This discovery was made by Jason Smith, an enthusiast who regularly explores Maine lakes using underwater drone technology. Smith initially returned to the area to revisit the snowmobile he found earlier, but then saw a dark figure in the distance. Upon closer inspection, the object turned out to be a Chevy Camaro lying at the bottom of the lake, raising questions about how the car got there.

Authorities with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office have taken over the investigation. Detectives coordinated with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to completely reconstruct the VIN, and officials are now searching historical records in hopes of identifying the car’s original owner and uncovering more details about its past.

Several theories have emerged regarding how the Chevy Camaro ended up in the lake. Investigators have ruled out the possibility that the object fell from the Frye Island ferry, and noted that such an incident has likely been documented. Instead, one of the more plausible explanations is that the vehicle may have broken through the ice during the winter, and eventually sank to the bottom.

Unfortunately, when the car was rediscovered, decades of corrosion had weakened its structure. The vehicle was essentially destroyed during the salvage process, making it difficult to collect additional physical evidence. Despite this, investigators remain hopeful that eyewitness accounts or statements will eventually shed light on the situation.
