Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon To Get Turbo Engine Power Boost

Posted on

GM’s midsize pickups, the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, are slated to see significant performance upgrades as part of a broader rollout of powertrain upgrades for the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B engine.

Currently marketed under the TurboMax brand, the updated 2.7L I4 L3B turbocharged gasoline engine will produce additional horsepower and torque compared to the current iteration of the engine, the latter rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Notably, the increased output numbers will also apply to GM’s next-generation TurboMax-powered full-size pickups, the 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2027 GMC Sierra 1500.

The TurboMax 2.7L I4 L3B engine currently serves as the sole engine option for the third-generation Colorado and Canyon, and has gone through many variations in terms of peak output. Debuting under the hood of the 2019 Silverado and Sierra, the engine was initially rated at 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque, and was later offered in a “high output” variant that increased torque from 348 to 420 pound-feet, with the final rating ultimately set at 430 pound-feet.

It is currently unclear whether the latest version of the TurboMax L3B engine will arrive at the same time as the 2027 Chevy Colorado and 2027 GMC Canyon, or will be delayed to the 2028 model year. GM Authority exclusively covered last month, General Motors is now preparing to release a refresh for the Chevy Colorado that is expected to debut for the 2027 or 2028 model year.

Sources indicate that the updated Chevy Colorado will feature a revised front fascia, additional interior upgrades, and, as discussed above, upgrades to the TurboMax four-cylinder. Regular production of the 2026 Chevy Colorado and 2026 GMC Canyon is now scheduled to conclude on October 16th2026 at the GM Wentzville Assembly plant in Missouri.

The updated TurboMax engine will also make its way to the next-generation 2027 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, which will also feature new styling, an overhauled interior, a new V8 engine option and more.
