Hyundai Ioniq 5 Named 2022 World Car of The Year, Wins Two Other Awards

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was a big winner at this year’s World Car Awards. The electric hatchback won three categories, including the prestigious 2022 World Car of the Year title.

Ioniq 5 was among the three finalists for the award. It beats the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Kia EV6, which Hyundai shares a platform with.

“The pace of change at Hyundai will continue through the remainder of 2022 as we will soon be adding to our award-winning IONIQ lineup.” Jaehoon Chang saidPresident and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, regarding the award.

Ioniq 5 too won the World Electric Vehicle of the Year. The other two finalists were the Audi E-Tron GT and the Mercedes-Benz EQS – both models that were much more expensive than the Hyundai.

The third win for Ioniq 5 is in World Car Design category. He won against the Audi E-Tron GT and Kia EV6.

Hyundai is preparing to expand the Ioniq 5 lineup by introducing the performance-focused N variant. Spy shots show that the sporty model has more aggressive tires, bigger brakes and a lower ride height. Its output remains a mystery, but the Kia EV6 on the same platform is available for up to 576 horsepower (430 kilowatts).

Audi E-Tron GT EV scores victory in World Performance Car division. It beats the BMW M3 and M4 and Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ combined.

“Our big goal with the Audi E-Tron GT is to reimagine the Gran Turismo philosophy for the electric era,” said Christiane Zorn, Head of Product Marketing at Audi.

In World Luxury Car category, Mercedes-Benz EQS took the win. It will be against the BMW iX and Genesis GV70.

Toyota Yaris Cross takes victory in World Urban Car class. The model won against the Opel Mokka and the Volkswagen Taigun.
