DeLorean CEO Says Company Will Be A “Full-Line Manufacturer”

Renew: A DeLorean spokesperson confirmed to Motor1.com that several cars will be shown at Pebble Beach later this year.

The new DeLorean is coming. It’s been teased a few times, and we know it’ll have an official debut later this year at Pebble Beach. However, not only one DeLorean is in the works. The reboot company has plans to offer a variety of models beyond the electric gullwing coupe. And to get a feel for what’s to come, we’ll actually see four generations of DeLoreans unfold in the next three months.

The news comes straight from DeLorean CEO Joost de Vries. Talk to Jo Borras at Electric News podcast, he’s not shy about sharing an image of the brand’s future. It started with the reborn coupe, but it didn’t end there.

“We didn’t just come out with a sports car. We needed a sports car to relaunch the brand, but the brand’s ambition is to become a full line manufacturer,” said de Vries. “We can’t survive a coupe, I don’t care how cool it is. Volume does not justify investing or a long-term perspective of what the investing world needs. So you will see other products from us. I wouldn’t say it’s an SUV or a sedan or anything. But there will be more volume-oriented products.”

The time frame for when we might see these other products is not stated. However, the future can be previewed with three additional vehicles that DeLorean will reveal in the next 90 days. During the podcast, de Vries explained that the original company had plans for more products beyond the iconic DMC-12. Some of those plans include custom designs, and apparently, some will come alive in some form or another.

Flirt with DeLorean

“What you’ll see from us over the next few months is DeLorean 1990, and DeLorean 2000, and DeLorean 2010,” said de Vries. “And then we will show you the DeLorean 2023. There is a legacy around this brand that the public has never seen before, and that will allow us to go beyond a coupe. So now it’s up to us to educate, and tell our story, what happened in the last 40 years. You will see 40 years of history condensed into 90 days.”

It’s not entirely clear whether these three vehicles will be evolutions of the original DMC-12 or different models altogether. The tone of the interview with de Vries suggests that we’ll see more than just a variety of gullwing sports cars, prompting the public to look at a world where DeLorean is a brand, not just one car.

In any case, the next few months will be very interesting for DeLorean fans and the automotive world in general. This will culminate on August 18 when the first new DeLorean vehicle in more than four decades is finally revealed.
