Mercedes-AMG Teaser Promises “New Star” Coming Soon For The SL-Class

[ad_1]

Something new with the Mercedes-AMG SL-Class is coming soon. But wait…isn’t the current SL-Class new? It’s true, having debuted less than a year ago to considerable fanfare for its refined styling and twin-turbocharged V8 power. However, that only offered with an upgraded V8. That might change, and that might lead to a new flagship model. Maybe.

This speculation stems from a teaser photo that was recently shared by Mercedes-AMG on social media. We were treated to a close-up view of the SL Class taillights, with the AMG badge clearly visible. Nothing out of the ordinary here, no signs of a design change, though the blue is quite striking. On the other hand, what Mercedes says in her post deserves a bit of scrutiny. On Facebook, the automaker specifically stated “a new star of the Mercedes-AMG SL family will be released soon.” The post also boasts this weird hashtag: #TheStarIsReborn.

Let’s focus on that hashtag first, because the word born again could be the key in this teaser. On March 23, our spy photographer captured the new SL playing in the snow without camouflage. At first glance, it doesn’t appear to be anything special, but the charging port on the rear bumper suggests it’s almost certainly a plug-in hybrid. Additionally, we’ve heard the hybrid version retains the twin-turbocharged V8. That makes 577 horsepower (430 kilowatts) in the SL63 trim, but with the help of electricity, the total output can approach 800 hp (597 kW).

Those outputs are just rumours, but this teaser certainly supports the new powertrain for the SL-Class. Call it new star also suggest this version will be placed above the SL63 as the flagship model. However, we also heard that a lower-spec SL43 with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine is coming soon. This is probably what Mercedes is teasing here, because it also fits the definition born again. And there’s always the possibility that all this stellar talk is simply referring to a new version of Merc’s iconic three-pointed star logo. We highly doubt that’s the case, but hey, we try to leave no stone unturned.

However, the teaser suggests something is coming soon. The 2022 New York Auto Show is almost here; which might be the place for Mercedes to reveal its all-powerful hybrid SL Class. We will definitely keep an eye on it.
