BMW 5 Series E28 Sedan Gets Transformed Into Low-Slung Drift Wagon

BMW has only ever offered the E28 5 Series as a sedan. The model won’t get a Touring variant until the next generation. With a lack of official E28 cars on the used market, BMW had no other choice but to build their own. Well, at least one person should do it.

Mateusz Dąbski built the E28 Touring in the video above, transplanting the rear of a Mercedes W123 into a BMW. He had to downgrade the C-pillar to the D-pillar and recreate the new C-pillar in its place which connects the Mercedes bottom to the rest of the BMW. He also had to extend the roof. Dąbski bought the car for $250 or $350 with plans to turn it into a drift car. However, he had to do more work to achieve that.

He replaced the car’s front suspension with that of the BMW 3 Series E36. Dedicated fenders provide the necessary space for 15-inch wheels and the car’s negative offset. He also gave the cart a unique paint scheme – fire burgundy on the dark blue exterior. He didn’t want anything too flashy, so the end result was a subtle effect that didn’t overpower the car’s design.

While BMW doesn’t offer the E28 wagon, third-party makers do, such as Schulz Tuning, although Dąbski notes that they use the back of the VW Passat in their cars. He chose the Mercedes rear because he thought it looked more aggressive, which gave the build more character.

The car was completed and entered the first drift competition a year after Dąbski bought it. He didn’t want to sell them, but he acknowledged that they were all sold for the right price. He said he would build another one himself if he wanted to sell it. He used the project to teach himself how to make an E28 wagon so he could build it for others. He says he’s always liked the E28, but he wanted something different this time. Its E28 Touring certainly fits the bill.
