In just the last few days, we’ve seen the next Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class lose its heavier camouflage cover for a thinner wrapper that doesn’t hide much. In this case, we also got a glimpse of a completely exposed test vehicle, although we only got a partial view of the passenger side.
However, the sighting was enough to make artist Nikita Chuiko at College to preview the new SUV. Unofficial renderings depict the upcoming GLC-Class from the front and rear, highlighting the expected changes to the fascia as well as the headlights. It’s certainly an evolutionary approach as opposed to changing the formula, although the simple exterior redesign hides the more significant updates underneath. Among other things, the new GLC-Class has to be slightly larger than the previous model, so it’s not just a simple reskin.
In addition to renderings, the new spy video captures a prototype in the snowy north, trying to complete a winter evaluation before warmer weather arrives. These vehicles wear heavier camouflage covers than the flimsy logo wrap that was caught recently in the photo, so at first glance, we don’t see much detail. However, the video does give us a glimpse of the SUV in action. And in some cases, the reflection of light from the camouflage wrap reveals body lines that would otherwise be invisible.
The next-generation GLC-Class will have to borrow heavily from the C-Class in terms of engine options. Internal combustion power will likely be the domain of the turbocharged four-cylinder engine and yes, that includes the eventual AMG model. Of course, electrification is also on the GLC menu with hybrid and plug-in hybrid configurations. The top-dog version of the Mercedes-AMG can have more than 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) with the hybrid powertrain.
When will the camo wrap officially be released? The specific timeframe remains unknown, but with the automaker now piloting the prototype in public wearing a body wrap consisting of the Mercedes logo, it’s safe to say the debut is coming sooner rather than later. That will surely happen before the end of this year, making the next-generation GLC-Class the 2023 model.
