Certain BMW vehicles are facing recalls in the US due to the risk of fire, which affects more than 900,000 vehicles. This was announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under campaign number 22V-119.
Only BMW models from the 1 Series Coupe to the Z4 Roadster, which were produced in a certain date range, are affected. Production dates have existed since January 2005. The table below shows the affected models and their corresponding production dates, as stated in Section 573 Security Withdrawal Report.

The cause of this massive recall involved a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) (blow-by-heater) valve heater. According to BMW, these components may not have been manufactured by the supplier to specifications, with deviations that could lead to a short circuit causing the PCV to overheat. If this happens, it can increase the risk of fire.
The components are made by Mahle International GmbH of Germany.
Exactly 917,106 vehicles were part of the recall, with only one percent estimated to come with defects. However, Bloomberg reported that 98,000 vehicles in Canada and 18,000 in South Korea were also affected, with information coming from a BMW spokesperson.
In 2017, BMW had issued a recall involving 1.4 million vehicles due to a similar problem with a similar risk. It was a set of vehicles with different production dates, as part of NHTSA’s recall campaign number 17V-683.
In 2019, NHTSA’s recall campaign number 19V-273 involved another set, involving the 2006 model year 3er, 5er, and Z4.
Without a VIN included in the NHTSA campaign report, it’s hard to determine if your BMW is part of this massive recall. If you suspect so, you may want to check with your dealer to see if you bimmer This damaged component must be repaired.
BMW has notified dealers of the recall. The company will also notify owners on April 25, 2022.
