The designs of many brands and models change over time. Some are very different from what came before, while others are iconic and difficult to modify. That challenge hasn’t stopped Mercedes from continuing to restyle the G-Class box, introducing a completely redesigned one for 2019. The G-Class will undergo a mid-cycle refresh, and a new spy shot has captured those changes in the test vehicle.
The shot shows the AMG G63, and like the rest of the G-Class lineup, the updates are minor, at least on the outside. This SUV wears camouflage, hiding the possible changes coming to the front and rear fascia. We expect Mercedes to improve on the styling of the bumper, although we don’t believe there will be any significant changes. The automaker can change the taillights or the graphics, but don’t expect much change beyond that.

There could be a bigger overhaul inside the SUV. Spy shots haven’t revealed what it’ll look like yet, but the current-generation G-Class is slightly behind the rest of the Mercedes lineup with its interior. Our spy photographer has told us that the Mercedes is covering the interior, which could indicate some changes.
The updated G63, and the rest of the G-Class lineup, will get the latest MBUX infotainment system, although Mercedes could go a step further by adding the large infotainment touchscreen introduced on other models such as the C-Class and S-Class. It would be a significant interior update for a mid-cycle refresh if Mercedes went that far.
The G63’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine makes 577 horsepower (430 kilowatts) and 627 pound-feet (850 Newton-meters) of torque today, but the updated one could do a lot more. The test vehicle didn’t have a sticker denoting a hybrid powertrain under the hood, but big electrification is now at Mercedes, and leaving the mighty G-Class without it seems to be falling behind. However, that doesn’t mean Mercedes won’t install a 48-volt mild hybrid system for more power and better efficiency.
The G-Class has record sales for 2021, so Mercedes is in no rush to replace the current generation SUV. The automaker hasn’t announced when it will introduce the redesigned model, but we expect it to arrive for the 2023 model year as soon as possible.
