Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition 550 Debuts With High-Class Cabin

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition 550 is the new special edition of the tough SUV coming to the United States. Only 200 of them will be sold here.

The G-Class Edition 550 is available in three high-end Mercedes Manufacturing colors: Jupiter Red, Arabian Grey, and Moonlight White, which are the latest additions to the color palette. This special edition also gets a new badge showing the silhouette of the G-Class climbing the mountain.

Inside, the Edition 550 comes with a two-tone Nappa leather upholstery with diamond stitching. The special edition includes active multi-contour front seats with active side rolls. Carbon fiber trim adorns the cabin.

The brush bar around the headlights and the horizontal bar on the grille tell us that the Edition 550 uses the G 550 as a starting point. This class uses a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces 416 horsepower (310 kilowatts) and 450 pound-feet (610 Newton-meters) of torque. The power is channeled through a nine-speed automatic gearbox with a two-speed transfer case. The SUV reaches 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in 5.6 seconds.

The only info we have about the G-Class Edition 550 comes from a post on the Mercedes-Benz USA Facebook page. No info on pricing or availability. Motor1.com contact the automaker for more details on this special edition.

It’s a bit surprising for Mercedes to introduce a special edition G-Class now that the automaker is allegedly struggling to keep up with SUV demand in several markets. G-Class records a new one record global sales in 2021 with 41,174 shipments. The company moved 8,523 of them in the United States last year, which is up 10.4 percent year-on-year.

Mercedes currently has a refresh of the G-Class in development. The changes appear to be quite minor. There’s a revised front fascia with reshaped intakes at the corners. The hood appears to have a flatter style. Fender flares look more angular.

Two more G-Class variants are also on the way. Spy shots show that a new 4×4 Squared is in development as there is very little camouflage on this vehicle. These models have a higher ride height, perhaps a lamppost above the windshield, a roof rack, and a ladder at the rear.

The fully electric G-Class is reportedly arriving in 2024. The EQG concept is a production glimpse of the upcoming model. It looks a lot like the ICE-powered version but has a glowing grille. Instead of a spare wheel carrier at the back, there is a storage area for storing items like charging cables. Mechanically, the concept has a shiftable two-speed gearbox that gives the driver the option of using crawler gear when off-road.
