Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Spied Shows Hot Hatch EV at a Glance

Development continues on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N electric hot hatch. Contrary to what we usually see, the development team added a lot more scope to this one, rather than removing the concealment.

Black fabric with block panels underneath covers the body of this Ioniq 5 N. Only the roof and part of the front fender are visible. The previous vehicle had a wrap that still hides something but gives us a better look at the general design.

This car seems to have headlights with production specifications. Don’t let the mesh body cover fool you. Judging from the previous spy shots, the Ioniq 5 N doesn’t have a front-end inlet of this size.

In profile, the car looks mostly like the standard Ioniq 5. Ride altitude appears lower. At the rear of the roof, you can see a larger rear spoiler. The wheels have a black finish and a design with five pairs of spokes. The front brake calipers are silver, and the rear ones are red.

Hyundai engineers covered most of the tail. The taillights look the same as those on the standard Ioniq 5.

Hyundai executive technical adviser Albert Biermann recently offered some pointers on what to expect from the Ioniq 5 N. He said the company hasn’t finalized the powertrain output yet, but the numbers are between 580 horsepower and 620 hp (427 kilowatts and 456 kW). The battery reportedly has a capacity of 77.4 kilowatt-hours.

Biermann says the Ioniq 5 N has a Drift Mode that prioritizes rear-routing power so the driver can shift the electric performance car. Like the standard model, the N has regenerative braking but also gets “strong friction brakes.”

The Ioniq 5 N will premiere in 2023. However, the exact time of its debut is still a mystery. This model could be on the market in time for the 2024 model year.

As of October 2022, Hyundai has shipped 20,071 Ioniq 5 units in the United States. It’s not available at this point in 2021, so we can’t compare year-to-year figures.
