Nissan Z Versus Toyota Supra Drag Race Highlights Gearbox Differences

It’s a good time to become a fan of Japanese sports cars as both the new Nissan Z and Toyota Supra offer customers an attractive choice. This video places the models with the six-cylinder engine and automatic transmission facing each other.

As a refresher, the new Z packs a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts) at 6,400 rpm and 350 pound-feet (475 Newton-meters) of torque from 1,600 to 5,200 rpm. The car has a nine-speed automatic transmission, but Nissan also offers a six-speed manual. An example here is the Performance class with 19-inch Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires.

In comparison, the Supra has a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that produces 382 hp (285 kW) from 5,800 to 6,500 rpm and 368 lb-ft (499 Nm) from 1,800 to 5,000 rpm. It has an eight-speed automatic, but Toyota is now also offering a six-speed manual. This car uses 19-inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

The drag race started off digging, and the video carrier was very unhappy with the Bridgestone Z tires. He struggled to lower the power at launch without turning the wheels. This gave the Supra some easy wins.

Things get even more interesting when they race off the reels. The first is from 32 miles per hour (52 kilometers per hour). The Supra jumps a long way and stays there, even though the Z has more power and extra gear to work with.

Subsequently, they resumed running the race in manual mode and in second gear. Change makes a big difference. Z took an early lead, and the Supra overturned the difference. The result is a finished photo. We only saw the result from one side of the cone, but it looks like Nissan will probably win by an inch or less.

The third roll race increases the initial speed to 50 mph (80 kph) but still starts it in second gear in manual mode. This time, Toyota took a clear win.

Finally, they got back to running this race, but this time the car’s transmission was in automatic mode. Toyota left the Z in the dust.

Judging from this video, it looks like the Toyota gearbox is more responsive when functioning as an automatic at least compared to the Z.

There are rumors of a more powerful Supra that might be under consideration. Allegedly it will take the BMW S58 engine from the M3 and M4. In addition, the body will get carbon fiber components.
