BMW’s future is increasingly electrified, but the company isn’t ready to give up on internal combustion engines yet. Watch this drag race from CarWow between the BMW M3 Competition and the i4 M50 to see a duel between the two sides of the German automaker.
The Competition M3 packs a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine that produces 503 horsepower (375 kilowatts or 510 metric hp) and 479 pound-feet (649 Newton-meters) of torque. The eight-speed automatic sends power to the rear wheels.

The i4 M50 is an EV with an electric motor on each axle, and produces a total of 536 hp (400 kW or 544 metric hp). The battery has a gross capacity of 83.9 kilowatt-hours with a usable 81.5 kWh. BMW estimates the range at 245 miles (394 kilometers).
The video begins with the best-of-three drag racing series. In the first, the i4’s front wheel spins out of line and gives the M3 just enough edge to win. Next up, it was the i4’s turn to score the win, but there’s a finished photo as the EV barely got ahead of the M. The M3 won in the last lap.
Next up, there are two rolling races of 50 mph (80 kph). Regardless of the driving mode, the result is roughly the same. The i4 jumped forward, and then the M3 finally sped past the EV. It’s worth noting, however, that this track occurs at a speed of around 100 mph (161 kph), which is fast enough to get a hefty traffic ticket in many parts of the world.
There are other rolling races starting at 30 mph (48 kph). The lower initial speed gives the i4 more of an advantage, and this time it takes a win.
The final challenge was the braking test from 100 mph (161 kph). The i4 manages to stop a few feet shorter than the performance-focused M3.
