Following a teaser released a few weeks ago, Mazda has again unveiled the CX-60 as the first model from the Large Product Group to be announced in October 2021. It’s not just a front-wheel-drive based crossover, but a new model built on an RWD platform. If you’re still unsure about the basics, the press release reads in black and white: “A striking front-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive SUV.”
The new sneak preview is actually about something else. While the first episode of the teaser campaign focused on Mazda’s first PHEV powertrain, the CX-60 now shows a bit of the cabin. It looks like the company’s interior will be moving upscale with a new wave of SUVs, which will include its widebody equivalent US counterpart dubbed the CX-70. From this 12-second clip, we get a bit of a Volvo vibe.

The sophisticated interior combines Japanese textiles and chrome accents with Nappa leather and genuine maple wood inserts. This is Mazda’s first model to implement “Musubu.” The company Zoom-Zoom describes it as “a uniquely Japanese way of tying textiles that served as inspiration for instrument panel stitching.”
All these high-end materials seem to create the cozy atmosphere we’ll see in full on March 8th when the CX-60 will launch. As the spy shot above shows, the plug-in hybrid SUV will stay true to the Kodo design language, adapted for its RWD-biased architecture. It will have a (fake) quad exhaust and over 300 horsepower by combining a 2.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor.
If you need a third row, the bigger CX-80 will arrive in the next two years in Europe and will be accompanied by the wider CX-90 for North America. All will share the newly developed platform, with some models getting an inline-six engine in select markets. All four and six cylinder units will be electrified to some extent as mild hybrids will be standard. An inline six-cylinder diesel engine is also coming soon, along with a smaller four-cylinder PHEV drivetrain.
Meanwhile, Mazda is also expanding its US portfolio with the addition of the CX-50 based on the FWD platform with a hybrid setup sourced from Toyota.
