McLaren Designer Likes Mercedes Vision EQXX But With Few Improvements

The Mercedes Vision EQXX is a fantastic concept vehicle. It’s a perfect showcase of what the German automaker can do in terms of aerodynamic efficiency, which plays a huge role in the EV era. In fact, the Vision EQXX concept car is designed to cut through the air with a drag coefficient of just 0.17, allowing it to cover more than 621 miles (1,000 kilometers) on a single charge.

With design heavily involved in this impressive aero feat, renowned designer Frank Stephenson stepped in and gave his take on the Vision EQXX’s styling in his latest YouTube post. Let’s just say he’s generally impressed with his car, but he has some improvements in mind.

The former McLaren designer – responsible for model numbers such as the P1, P4-12C, and 720S – found the Vision EQXX interesting to look at, especially given the amount of simplicity required from an aerodynamic car.

However, Stephenson points out that there is something else that could be improved on the Vision EQXX. The side mirrors could be smaller for a better drag coefficient, as well as the door handles. He also thought that the front door closing line was a bit too straight – a stark contrast to the car’s many curves. And while he liked the back of the concept, he thought that the panel between the taillights and the bumper was a bit lifeless.

Stephenson also notices that the Vision EQXX’s wheel lip still has the harsh feature lines, which is an old-fashioned design. With Ferrari, Maserati, BMW, and Mini in his portfolio, he sure knows a thing or two about automotive design. In the end, Stephenson gave the Vision EQXX a score of 9.3, which put him in sixth place out of his top 10, just below the Ferrari Roma.
