The Tata Tiago EV Is A $10,000 Electric Vehicle For The Masses

Tata once had the cheapest new car on sale and the Indian automaker is now continuing the tradition by releasing perhaps the most affordable electric vehicle in the world. The Tiago EV is specially designed for the Indian market and offers a decent range of only around $10,000 at current exchange rates. We’ll get into pricing details soon, but first, let’s talk more about the vehicle’s specs.

The Tiago EV is a small, zero-emissions hatchback that will be sold with two available battery packs. The XE is the entry-level version with a 19.2 kWh battery pack, which – thanks to effective electric power and the car’s low weight – can cover up to 155 miles (250 kilometers) on a single charge as measured by the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC). ). ).

Indian customers willing to pay extra for a larger battery can get the XT, XZ+, XZ+ Tech LUX models, which come as standard with a 24 kWh battery. With that, the distance between the two payloads increased to 194 miles (315 km). The XZ+ and XZ+ Tech LUX trims come with either 3.3 AC or 7.2 kW AC onboard charging. Tata did not provide information about the Tiago EV’s fast-charging options, although it does say that the electric hatch can cover a distance of about 68 miles (110 km) in about 30 minutes.

A relatively high range between charges given the size of the battery is possible thanks to a small permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that powers the front wheels. It produces a peak output of 74 horsepower (55 kilowatts) and instant torque of 84 pound-feet (114 Newton-meters). There’s no information on the 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) sprint, although Tata says the Tiago EV reaches 37 mph (60 kph) in under six seconds.

Sales of the Tiago EV will begin on October 10 with the first 10,000 customers getting a special introductory price of 8.49 Lakhs or around $10,370 at the current exchange rate. The high-end XZ+ Tech LUX model costs 11.79 Lakhs, which is around $14,500.
