Chevrolet Sonic is back! But don’t expect to see it at your local dealer, as this sub-compact superstar has been revived as a crossover specifically for the South American market.
General Motors in Brazil has just announced the return of the Sonic name. The automaker is calling the reborn Sonic an SUV coupe, which is code for a crossover with a sloping roofline. It’s a familiar-looking machine, even though it’s new. There’s clear inspiration from Equinox and Trax throughout the new Sonic.
Regardless, the little runabout looks great. Too bad we can’t buy it.

Critical Models In Important Markets
Chevrolet launches the new Sonic into Brazil’s most popular market segment. There, it sits between the Onix Activ and Tracker in GM’s large portfolio of available SUVs and crossovers.
The automaker is eager to bring new buyers to the brand, and this could prove successful given the potential powertrain we’ve heard about coming under Sonic’s belt.
General Motors has a flex-fuel hybrid setup starting to roll out in the South American market. This mild hybrid setup pairs a 48-volt system with a small 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. While it’s already set for use on the Tracker and Montana, rumor has it that the Sonic could also receive a version of the same setup.
Unbound To The US
The 2026 Chevy Sonic remains a model built for the South American market. There are currently no plans to bring it to the US. This is very unfortunate, considering how expensive new cars and fuel prices are.
The Sonic has the potential to undercut the Trax, while offering a fuel alternative to the Bolt.
