- Nissan confirmed the new Xterra will be priced under $40,000.
- Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier said the Xterra will have ‘everything you need and nothing you don’t’.
- The SUV is expected to debut sometime next year before going on sale for the 2028 model year.
Nissan is preparing a new Xterra, and people are worried about the price. New car prices aren’t dropping, but when the Xterra goes on sale, it won’t completely break the bank.
In an interview last week, Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier confirmed that his company would bring the Xterra “under $40,000.” The company has hinted at that price point before, with Nissan SVP Michael Soutter saying last November that the SUV “should start” below that price.
According to EdmundsMeunier said that the Xterra will have “everything you need and nothing you don’t,” admitting that the company has gone “a little astray” by adding a lot of new technology and features “for the sake of it.”
“We will stop doing it,” he added. “Xterra will be the symbol.”

What We Know About the New Xterra
While Nissan is eager to talk about its new SUV, it’s not expected to go on sale until the 2028 model year. The company released one teaser image last week, showing off a sculpted hood, subtle lighting accents above the grille, and bold “NISSAN” branding.
The Xterra will differentiate itself from its competitors through its powertrain. Nissan says it will stick with the V6 engine in the Xterra, likely relying on the automaker’s 3.8-liter engine that makes 310 horsepower in the Frontier pickup. Apart from the ICE only variant, Nissan will also offer a V6 hybrid option.
This body-on-frame SUV will compete with off-road offerings like the four-door Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Toyota 4Runner. All three have a starting price of around $40,000.
Motorcycle Pickup1: A starting price of under $40,000 is huge for the Xterra. We don’t know how far it will go, but with its V6 engine, body-on-frame design, and limited technology, this car could be the value consumers are looking for today.
