Get ready: A new Nissan Xterra is on the way. The company has confirmed that the SUV will return to its lineup, likely for the 2028 model year, and now we’ve got our first official preview. From what we’ve seen so far, it looks pretty tough.
Nissan has released a single teaser image showing the front of the upcoming Xterra. While details are still fairly thin, there are a few key elements that stand out: the striking “NISSAN” wordmark on the front bumper, yellow accent lights tucked beneath the hood stripe, and a striking coat of yellow paint. It looks like the new Xterra will also have split headlights.

Keen-eyed viewers may notice some design cues you’ve seen before. The three-accent lighting resembles what we’ve seen on global Nissan models like the Frontier Pro PHEV (as does the yellow paint), and there’s even a slight similarity to the latest Pajero teaser.
But that’s not too surprising. Nissan’s more rugged models tend to share a design language and features. We already know that the new Xterra will use a body-on-frame platform and feature a naturally aspirated V6 engine—so no hybrid powertrain this time.
The new Xterra is expected to arrive sometime in 2028.
Motorcycle Pickup1: This teaser image doesn’t show much, but it gives us a good idea of what the next Xterra SUV will look like when it debuts in just a few years.
