Infiniti recently unveiled its newest coupe-like two-row crossover, the 2027 QX65. This beautiful machine debuts with a unique paint color dubbed Sunfire Red. Take a closer look at the color, because if you think it’s a bit dazzling, that’s because of the actual gold used in the paint.

Sunfire Red features gold plated glass flecks. Gold bonds to microscopic glass flakes, allowing them to spread evenly throughout the paint.

Applying Sunfire Red requires a three-stage painting process. There is a red base coat. The middle layer is a transparent layer consisting of gold plated spots, then there is a clear layer to protect everything.

Infiniti says each QX65 requires two gallons of paint. And the actual production process requires extra layers of security and inventory monitoring. Paint suppliers use armored trucks to transport the gold used in the paint.
