The manual transmission, like the sedan, does not shut off. They’re not as popular as they used to be, and that’s true. Tastes change, and new trends emerge, but not all automakers are willing to give in to pressure from peers, like Ford. The American automaker has no plans to ditch the manual gearbox in the Mustang any time soon.
According to reports from Car ExpertFord CEO Jim Farley recently told Australian media, “Because of our cold, dead hands, we won’t have a manual Mustang.”
Ford offers a six-speed manual transmission on the Mustang equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 engine. The automaker is eliminating the manual gearbox option for the Mustang EcoBoost with the arrival of the S650 generation in 2024, which is only available with a 10-speed automatic.
Manual gearboxes may not be as efficient or fast as modern automatic transmissions, but having the ability to shift gears yourself isn’t about pure speed. People prefer to feel the connection that a dual-clutch can’t offer because it serves a different purpose—and Ford understands that.
