Porsche announced the Virtual Road project, which aims to offer drivers a way to get to their favorite highways at home using technology. The project wants to speed up the time-consuming process of turning real-world highways into virtual roads, using smartphones and apps. The driver can then quickly and easily select their favorite route from the real life drive and use it using the driving simulator.
For the record, the current road digitization technology uses a laser as a scanner. However, this can take months, if not years, including the development of the racing video game itself. Porsche wants to cut that timeframe in the future when Virtual Road becomes public.

This is made possible through software developed by Way Ahead Technologies. The program uses technology such as artificial intelligence to capture roads and surrounding features, such as collision barriers and trees. This is then reproduced as quickly as possible in digital 3D.
According to Way Ahead Technologies, the current version of the program can digitize up to 4.97 miles (8 kilometers) of roads in less than an hour. Of course, it will depend on the complexity of the road. If you are concerned about data protection, the company says that the program ensures that other road users are not taken from real life and transferred to cyberspace.
As with most driving simulations, the characteristics of the route are also captured in the program. This includes uneven road surfaces with vibrations along with other nuances one would expect from a virtual drive.
Porsche says that the files created by the Virtual Road project are currently compatible with a number of racing video games including Assetto Corsa. However, the exact list of compatible games is not yet available.
