In the 1980s, when Mercedes-Benz decided it needed a successor to the legendary 300SL, it began work on a new roadster, which made its official debut in 1989. On sale until 2001, the luxurious open-top model was one of the most valuable models ever used. Mercedes vehicles are on the market with prices increasing every year. With 213,089 examples created, it’s not particularly rare, although it’s considered exotic to some extent.
Known internally as the R129, the SL from the 1990s is becoming increasingly rare in right-hand drive configurations. Finding one for sale is a tough job and finding one sitting in a warehouse is even more challenging. However, Bearded Explorer, a YouTube channel exploring “whatever abandoned and abandoned around the world”, was lucky enough to come across a stunning red 300SL from the early 1990s. Here’s the story.
One of the host’s followers contacted him and told him they had a very rare car locked in the garage. It had been sitting there for almost ten years and its current condition was unknown. Ah, and here’s the catch – the video host wasn’t told what the car was hiding in the garage and he wasted no time visiting the place a few weeks later.
As you can see in the video, the hosts arrived somewhere with a few garages and a red Vauxhall Frontera Sport sitting in front. The SUV is also an interesting vehicle – of a rare and relatively low-mileage version – but the star of the video is behind one of the doors. There, the spectacular red Mercedes-Benz 300SL has been hiding for the last decade and we were surprised to see it’s actually in great shape.

The entire car was covered in towels, probably in an attempt to protect it from dust. The good news is that fabric roofs are nearly clean apart from dust – good cleaning and conservation will return them to factory condition.
We don’t know what will happen to this 300SL – will it be restored? Or will it sit in this garage for another decade before someone finds it again? We don’t know but we know it’s safe there and future generations will most likely see it on the road one day.
