BMW Hints Electric Supercar Could Happen On Neue Klasse Platform

The 600-horsepower BMW Vision M hybrid supercar shown here unfortunately never came to fruition as it only remained at the concept stage. Dubbed the XM, the special M model will arrive towards the end of the year, but it will be a plug-in hybrid SUV rather than a low-key, two-seat sports coupe. Fans should not lose hope as the introduction of the Neue Klasse platform in 2025 can (eventually) leading to a fully fledged performance engine.

Australian magazine Which car sat down and chatted with BMW’s chief technical officer, Frank Weber. When reporters Down Under said the Bavarian lineup was missing a halo car in the same vein as the M1, the CTO was quick to reply: “Wrong. We have absolutely no trouble imagining a highly emotional model based on the New Class matrix.” While that’s not a direct confirmation of a bona fide supercar, it’s still better than nothing.

A low-volume sports car with an exorbitant price tag may not be the best business decision, especially since BMW is investing heavily to decarbonize its lineup. However, it would give the German luxury brand an image boost, which some say is necessary given some of the questionable design choices made in recent years.

Which car citing “those in the know” who claim a flagship car based on the Neue Klasse can have four electric motors on the wheels and take only five minutes to recharge. That last one seems like a pipe dream for now, but it could happen someday.

While a supercar may be for sure, Weber says a city car shaped after the i Vision Circular concept, possibly as a replacement for the i3, isn’t on the agenda:

“The new megacity vehicle is currently out of sight.” He says the tiny EV is a window into BMW’s future: “The full circle of CO2-neutral materials cycle from cradle to grave, the delayed demise of the controversial rodent fang grille in favor of butterfly kidneys, and a new brand strategy. , which is set to shape the product of the future more from the inside out.”
