The Mercedes-AMG E 53 plug-in hybrid is being developed in Europe. This one uses camouflage body wrap and a few body panels that hide the shape of the sedan. However, these images give us a decent look at the sporty version of the four-door plug-in hybrid.
The design of this next-generation E-Class matches what we saw in the spy shots of the previous sedan development. The styling is similar to the latest S-Class, just not as big. Compared to the current generation, the headlights and grille appear smaller.

The headlights include a running light along the top. There are curved LEDs along the bottom of the headlights.
Along the sides, the new E-Class has flat-mounted doorknobs. The diagonal crease is at the bottom of each door. This one has mismatched wheels. The one in front has five pairs of spokes. On the back, there are 10 spokes that split into Y at the edges.
At the rear, a pair of exhaust pipes coil out from each corner. The charging port is on the left rear fender.
Like the recently spied on SL 53, we know nothing about the powertrain for this plug-in hybrid E-Class. One possibility is an electrically assisted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. An inline-six PHEV is another option.
We don’t have any pictures inside the new E-Class yet. Expect the technology from the S-Class to trickle down to the smaller model. This means there should be a large screen with the latest MBUX software.
While this E-Class looks production-ready, we don’t expect the new generation of sedan to debut until late 2023 or even 2024. This is because the updated model is only from the 2021 model year. The company is in no rush to introduce the next-generation version.
The new E-Class will hit the market at about the same time as the next-generation BMW 5 Series and Porsche Panamera. This will be a bit of competition in the German sedan segment.
