Thanks to this onboard video we get to see the Mercedes-AMG One in action at the Hockenheimring. The Mercedes-AMG One is one of the most ambitious road car projects ever to reach production. This impressive hybrid hypercar uses technology lifted directly from the Mercedes-AMG F1 team to produce an F1 car for the road. The Mercedes-AMG One not only shares a powertrain with the Mercedes-AMG F1 car, but also has impressive on-track performance.
We first saw the Mercedes-AMG One in 2017 when Mercedes-AMG announced a limited production hypercar that would use a powertrain derived from their F1 program. The difficulty of converting a race F1 engine into a powertrain suitable for road use is no easy task. It took years of engineering and development to produce a reliable powertrain that delivers impressive performance while still complying with emissions regulations.
The Mercedes-AMG One engine will be built at the same AMG engine plant in Brixworth that makes the engines used in F1. The combined output of this hybrid hypercar is 1,049 horsepower (782 Kilowatts). Mercedes-AMG stated they were unable to provide final torque figures due to the complexity of the drivetrain.
At the heart of the drivetrain is a turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine known as the PU106C that spins at 11,000 rpm and produces 574 horsepower (428 Kilowatts). The use of MGU-H will eliminate turbo lag for the V6 engine which is similar to this F1 car.
Since this engine was pulled from the F1, it is also equipped with the MGU-K which is an electric motor mounted on the V6, this particular unit produces 163 horsepower (121 Kilowatts). Unlike F1 cars, the Mercedes-AMG One uses electric motors mounted on each front wheel to produce a combined output of 326 horsepower (243 Kilowatts).
To support this impressive drivetrain, the larger carbon fiber Mercedes-AMG One uses a complex push-rod suspension setup similar to systems found on F1 cars. There are also a number of active aero features that the Mercedes-AMG One benefits from which are illegal in F1. The Mercedes-AMG One even features a DRS mode to give the driver more speed on straights during driving.
