The Volkswagen Touareg turns 20 this year and although it is no longer available in North America, the Volkswagen Touareg is still the flagship SUV brand in other regions of the world. The third-generation Touareg made its official debut in 2018 and now it’s time for a mid-cycle refresh to keep the demand alive.
Earlier this month, our spy photographer captured a test prototype of the facelifted Touareg, although it was very cleverly disguised. The smart camouflage keeps most of the visual revisions under wraps, though we saw at least a few tweaks to the front fascia. Based on this spy photo, our friends and colleagues at Kolesa.ru created these two exclusive renderings previewing the design changes.
As you can see, the front fascia is the area where most of the changes will be focused. The radiator grille is expected to be reshaped with a new bottom which gives the Touareg a more dynamic look. The headlights could continue with the same shape, although the new internal graphics could make for a better visual connection with the chrome trim on the fascia. The larger angular vents on the front bumper will complement the design changes at the front.
The rest of the 2023 Touareg will likely remain unchanged with the only exception being the taillights. When this rendering is previewed, the group of lights on the back can get a new graphic to better communicate with the headlights.
It’s fair to say the upcoming facelift for the Touareg will bring very minimal visual revisions. The same goes for the interior where new trim options and an improved material selection can be expected. In the engine department, a variety of petrol and diesel engines will be available, as well as plug-in power for those seeking more efficient and powerful options. Mild hybrid technology can increase the efficiency of turbocharged combustion plants.
It seems that Touareg is currently in the early stages of receiving a facelift. Given the nature of the changes, however, we don’t expect development to take more than a few months, meaning a debut may be made before the end of the year.
