That’s what a driver must do after hitting a deer in Minnesota, and a dramatic video shows the consequences of that decision.
The video is from the Minnesota Department of Transportation. It was posted to the MN Crime YouTube Channel, and it shows a red Chevy Silverado sitting right in the middle of Interstate 35 near Forest Lake outside Minneapolis as the two semifinals approach it. The one with the Gulf Livery in the outer lane started toward the exit, but the semi in the other lane continued to slide toward the abandoned pickup.
The semi truck did not turn or slow down as it approached the Chevy, hitting the back of the vehicle. The truck folded and collapsed while semi-eliminating it, sending it sliding off the highway. The collision was strong enough to cause the Chevy to catch fire as it spun off the road. The semi-truck that hit him also skidded off the road, stopping at the grass median between the highway and the highway exit.
Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Gordon Shank told the Star Tribune that no one was injured in the crash. The driver of the red Chevy, Susan Norberg, told the publication that she abandoned the vehicle after hitting a deer. The impact was strong enough to eject the airbags, which filled the cabin with smoke and made it difficult to open the doors. After being released, he and his passengers found safety behind a guardrail.
Shank did not elaborate on why the driver of the semi-truck failed to avoid hitting the red Chevy, as other vehicles could. However, Shank told the Star Tribune that police recommend good driving behavior and a distraction-free cabin.
