Ford F-150 Raptor R Spied Camo-Free, Could Have 7-Speed DCT From GT500

It looks like we’re very close to the full reveal of the long-awaited Ford F-150 Raptor R. This is our second sighting of the camo-free prototype in the span of just a week, with only the R badge hidden in the grille. But this time, we have some interesting information to share.

It’s no secret the Raptor R will have a V8 engine under the hood. That was confirmed a long time ago by a Ford representative, although the specific engine type wasn’t mentioned. This is widely believed to be a version of the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 used in the Mustang Shelby GT500, slightly lowered but still producing between 725 and 750 horsepower. That would be a lot to dethrone the Ram TRX, but what about the transmission? A 10 speed auto was expected, but our spy team observed this prototype being executed very rapid gear change. Could that mean the Shelby’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is also meant for Raptor R duty?

Compared to the standard F-150 Raptor, the R model will obviously pack a lot more power while also using upgraded suspension components. Previous spy photos have shown a different trailing arm for the rear suspension, and obviously, a larger exhaust pipe to accommodate the larger engine. Other suspension changes are unknown, although the standard Raptor is capable enough to handle off-road trails with gusto. As such, updates to the R will likely focus on larger components that can handle the extra power.

Visually, the Raptor R could be something to sleep with unless you hear a hoarse exhaust tone. There’s a bit more black on the underside of the front bumper where the skid plate is attached, and there’s definitely an R badge on the grille. Graphics packs advertising the Raptor R are almost guaranteed, but as with the current model, chances are they could be abandoned for trucks that seem stealthy. That is, until you hit the throttle.

The F-150 Raptor R will go on sale later this year. That, combined with recent sightings of the truck without a camo, strongly suggests that its debut could be weeks or even days away.
