With every other vehicle appearing to be a crossover, it’s refreshing to see a new wagon in the works. Audi has been caught testing the next-generation A4 Avant several times, and this speculative rendering attempts to digitally disarm the camouflage. Going against design trends and coming as a pleasant surprise, this BMW 3 Series Touring rival will get a smaller front grille, flanked by slightly slimmer looking headlights.
In typical Ingolstadt fashion, the Four Rings won’t rock the boat in terms of design, which is something we can’t say about its archrival BMW. The test vehicle we spied on didn’t have the final taillights, but the bulge in the rear doors leads us to believe the prototype has a wide light bar befitting a recent Audi. Design drills don’t reveal the interior, but we know for sure the MMI infotainment will be neatly integrated into the center console.
The German luxury brand has announced the new A4 will deliver the company’s last generation of petrol and diesel engines. It will use the evolution of the MLB platform and rely on a 48V mild hybrid system to cut fuel consumption to keep regulators happy. A plug-in hybrid with a large battery is coming soon, and there may also be an equivalent electric model powered by a bespoke PPE architecture.
This will be the last long-roofed A4 with a petrol/diesel engine and we believe it will also be the company’s penultimate car to ever get ICE power. We expect the next A6 Avant to serve as the epilogue to the combustion engine wagon when it arrives in the years to come. Both the A4 and A6 will stick with traditional engines until the end of the decade.
As previously reported, Audi will launch its last new car with a combustion engine in 2025. Everything from 2026 will be pure EVs, with production of ICE-powered vehicles set to end in 2032. There is one exception as China may still offer “old school” drivetrains in its markets. beyond that date if there is still sufficient demand.
