A new teaser for the BMW M LMDh race car offers our first look at the actual race car, rather than showing a rendering. Unfortunately, photos of the competition engine put it in the shadows, which limits what we can see.
Taking a closer look, there are beveled headlights on the outer edge of the front end. The top of each fender has a louvered section, and the side mirrors have a sharp shape. The spoon is right above the cockpit. At the rear, the wings span almost the entire width of the vehicle.
The entire midsection is covered in shadow, but some work in the photo editor reveals more detail (above). You can see the outline of the large inlets at the front, and the wrinkled bodywork at the front of the cockpit.
The previous teaser (below) shows the M LMDh rendering, and it gives us a much better look at the nose. This race car has a large grille opening, which connects the vehicle with street BMW models with widened nostrils such as the latest M3 and M4. There is also a prominent front splitter.
No technical details are available about the available M LMDh, including its engine configuration. Class rules mandate a hybrid powertrain.
According to our colleagues at Motorsport.comDallara will supplying the BMW M LMDh . chassis. Car track testing will begin in 2022, and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing will campaign two, factory-powered engines starting at Rolex 24 in Daytona in January 2023. The German automaker will then enter the machine in 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans.
BMW will try to find at least one customer team for the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the US and the FIA World Endurance Championship, in addition to the factory-backed teams competing in the series.
M LMDh will face a lot of competition in the classroom. For example, Porsche has gone deep into development and is already doing track testing. Akura, Cadillacand Lamborghini are also working on entries.
