Vans may not be the highway haulers one might imagine driving the German Autobahn, but such vehicles are quite comfortable on well-known roads. The unlimited speed passage allows this large and useful beast to fly past slower traffic sitting in the right lane even if a van like the Fiat Ducato 150 Multijet can only pump out a fraction of 148 horsepower (110 kilowatts).
That’s what this 2013 Fiat gives from its 2.3 liter engine. Not much, but enough to make a large cargo van hit triple-digit speeds. The Fiat odometer only reads up to 180 kilometers per hour (111 miles per hour), indicating a lack of performance prowess.
However, the Fiat was able to bury the needle far past the marker, but it was impossible to determine its speed. Something as massive and non-aerodynamic as a Ducati still has to overcome physics.
The Ducato has a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pairs a 148-hp output with 258 pound-feet (350 Newton-meters) of torque. The high speeds didn’t seem too bothersome for the Fiat, which sped past other cars, trucks, and vans.
Fiat’s lineup has thinned in the US since the hopeful days of 2013, but Fiat still has a strong presence overseas. Now under the Stellantis umbrella, the pair Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group. It is one of more than a dozen brands in the conglomerate, and has a strong lineup of vans, including electric offerings. However, we couldn’t experience it in the US or on the Autobahn.
The Autobahn is a strange road, but one where supercars can reach unnatural speeds and mainstream workhorses can stretch their legs too. It’s not uncommon to see videos of cars crashing like the Honda Civic Type R and BMW 3 Series at nearly 300 kph (180 mph) on the road. Leave enough room for any vehicle on the road, and even a car like a low-powered Fiat van can impress with its speed.
