You never know what dangers may lurk on a dark street in the stillness of the night. Trees can hide all sorts of surprises, and the silhouette of a house as you pass by can be a little scary. That’s especially true when you come across an abandoned house perched in the middle of the street. Wait, what?
This is a scenario that plays out early May 22 in Loreauville, Louisiana, a small village about 130 miles west of New Orleans. A report came into the Iberian Parish Sheriff’s Office at about 3:30 a.m. about an official house blocking all of Berard Street. It’s a narrow road that doesn’t even reach half a mile, but post on Facebook from the sheriff’s office said the illegal move, which also crossed a much longer road nearby, caused extensive damage and cut power to hundreds of people.
The one-story house was found abandoned along with the truck and trailer that transported it, but apparently, that is no mystery to the police. Based on CountryInvestigators soon had a person of interest due to previous dealings with the homeowner, identified as 46-year-old Tony Domingue. One doesn’t just stand up and move house; local authorities have warned Domingue that a permit is required for the operation. He apparently ignored the warning, and as a result, the midnight movement damaged or destroyed many mailboxes, trees, and road signs. The house also cut power lines, reportedly cutting power to 625 customers.
As for why houses and trucks were left on the road, it’s unclear. Maybe the shock (no pun intended) of the power line running down caused him to rethink the situation, or maybe it’s just time to sleep. After all, the authorities tracked down Domingue and arrested him along with 32-year-old Nico Comeaux, because hey, moving house isn’t a one-man job.
They also don’t get a slap on the wrist. Both were charged with criminal damage to property, obstruction of highway commerce, and breach of Parish rules, with bail set at a hefty $125,000.
