See The M4 CSL Set Nurburgring Lap Record For Production BMWs

[ad_1]

Shortly after launching the M4 GTS back in 2015, BMW announced the hardcore coupe with a water injection system had licked the Nürburgring in 7 minutes and 27.88 seconds. Fast forward to 2022, his spiritual successor has managed to slash over seven seconds by completing the Nordschleife lap in 7 minutes and 20.20 seconds. As a result, the M4 CSL is now the fastest street legal BMW in Green Hell.

Behind the wheel of the third time Bavarian Sport Lightweight Coupe model is development engineer Jörg Weidinger. Working for BMW for over 20 years and at M GmbH since 2013, a skilled driver is also responsible for the lap times of the M4 GTS. The reason why the car is still camouflaged is because the record-breaking was done while the M4 CSL was still being tested in the ‘Ring.

The video pauses at 7:05 and you can see the prototype reach speeds of 300 km/h (186 mph) on a long straight. Jörg Weidinger pushed the M4 CSL almost to its maximum as the car peaked at 191 mph (307 km/h) after doing 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.7 seconds and 0 to 124 mph (200 km/h) in 10.7 seconds.

These impressive numbers were made possible after hitting the inline-six engine output of 40 horsepower while shedding 240 pounds (108.8 kilograms) compared to the Competition model. The auto-only CSL also received improved aerodynamics, allowing it to tackle corners at higher speeds than the lower M4 variant. For superior stopping power, ceramic brakes come standard equipment, which we can say the same about the electronically controlled damper adaptive suspension.

While the upcoming XM will be a dedicated M car and the first since the original mid-engined M1, it is highly unlikely that its lap times will be anywhere near the M4 CSL’s lap times. It is impossible to design a heavy SUV to be as nimble as a much smaller vehicle that only has two seats. That said, BMW is believed to be planning a revival of the 3.0 CSL based on the M4 CSL, but with 600 horsepower and even a manual gearbox.
