While we patiently wait for BMW to finally release the much-vaunted M2 (G87), a lesser member of the 2 Series Coupe family is getting an update. At the bottom of the food chain, the 218i is coming to Europe for those willing to settle for just 154 horsepower (115 kilowatts) and 250 Newton-meters (184 pound-feet) of torque. Like all other compact coupes, the entry-level 2er is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The BMW 218i won’t set a Nurburgring record anytime soon as it takes 8.7 seconds to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from rest. The Base 2 Series Coupe is part of an extensive summer update, which also includes standard shift paddles on all four-cylinder versions to mirror the larger six-cylinder M240i xDrive. By the way, the M Performance model received its own update.

It’s been a long time coming and now it’s finally here – the M240i got a cheaper version on the Old Continent that got rid of the xDrive. Already appearing in the BMW Deutschland configurator, the rear-wheel-drive M240i costs €56,000, lowering the asking price by €2,000. With no power channeled to the front axle, this sporty compact coupe takes an extra 0.4 seconds to complete a sprint of up to 62 mph (100 km/h). As a result, the job is now completed in 4.7 seconds.
BMW says all 2 Series Coupes produced from July will transition to the iDrive 8 with curved glass housing a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster coupled with 14.9-inch infotainment. The Minivan Active Tourer 2 Series already has it, and so does the M2. As for the Gran Coupe Series 2, there is no word yet on rival Mercedes CLA which will get it in the near future.
As a final note, BMW added the Innovation Package and Comfort Package to the 2 Series Coupe in Europe. Later this year, the new RWD-only M2 will arrive as the crown jewel of the lineup and the only version to offer a manual transmission.
