BMW 2 Series Coupe And M3 Get Standard iDrive 8

BMW is poised with a summer model update for the 2022 model range, which includes a new standard infotainment system for the 2 Series Coupe and M3. The company’s iDrive 8 technology will be standard on all versions of the performance coupe from July this year. There are other improvements that are also worth mentioning, but let’s start with the new curved display.

It seems a bit unexpected for BMW to give the two models such huge tech upgrades without an actual generational change or facelift, even though the move makes a lot of sense. The automaker will soon launch the new M2 and M3 Touring, both of which have already been confirmed to get the new iDrive 8 system. It would be strange if the lower-end Series 2 Coupe model and standard M3 sedan kept the previous generation of infotainment, which easily explains the mid-cycle upgrade.

BMW’s new infotainment system is now standard for the updated X7 and will soon be available in all versions of the 2 Series Coupe. It will come with a new dashboard design, featuring a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen. The two screens are joined behind a single glass surface that curves toward the driver, giving the impression of one very large screen. The same system will also be standard on the M3 sedan from July this year. For the record, BMW revealed the facelifted 3 Series family earlier this week.

All Bavarian brand models equipped with iDrive 8 will get enhanced digital services, including updated navigation functions. Soon, new advanced software for pure electric vehicles will be activated, activating battery preconditioning in preparation for DC fast charging.

Elsewhere in the 2022 lineup, the 2 Series Active Tourer will receive two new plug-in hybrid powertrains plus a 48-volt electrified diesel engine. Two new engines will also join the Series 2 Coupe lineup, while the Series 4 Gran Coupe will get two new six-cylinder units. New equipment packages will be added to the Series 1 and Series 2 lineups. All these changes will be effective from July this year.
