Mercedes-Benz continues testing the smallest member of its range. At the beginning of last year, we saw a prototype of the Mercedes A-Class disguised in sedan and hatchback form, which told us that a facelift was coming soon.
Another partially encased prototype was caught off guard during testing. Just like the previous prototype, only the front and rear fascia are hidden. But that’s not the odd part – the Class-A prototype was caught by KimbelAuto (embedded above) seen on a US coast, wearing a Michigan factory plate.
Why is this weird? That’s because a report from last year said that Mercedes-Benz would retire the A-Class from the US lineup after the 2022 model year. This move would effectively position the CLA-Class as the new entry-level model for American Merc buyers.
However, the prototype rolling on American soil does not match previous reports, but no one has confirmed otherwise.
The facelifted A-Class model seen here is similar to the previous prototype we saw from the other side of the pool. There’s concealment around the headlights, though we don’t expect a significant update on this part. Most of the changes will likely be applied to the bumper to keep the model fresh. And of course, a new mesh grille is expected on non-AMG models.

Same story behind. The taillights could get new graphics, while the bumper could get a redesigned diffuser which will depend on the trim level.
Inside, the A-Class is expected to get a redesigned console to house the latest MBUX infotainment suite. While the design update seems simple, the engine options update is also expected to be the same, although things may change when it rolls out.
Mercedes-Benz has yet to announce the exact arrival of the updated A-Class, but we believe it will launch sometime this year for the 2023 model year.
