The SLS AMG Electric Drive is a coy attempt by Mercedes’ performance division to develop a fast EV. It is believed that nine cars have ever been made by replacing the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine with quad electric motors, one for each wheel. Even a decade later, the technical specifications are nothing to scoff at as the zero-emissions coupe has 740 horsepower (552 kilowatts) and 738 pound-feet (1,000 Newton-meters) of torque.

The EV scene has evolved drastically since 2012 and Mercedes-AMG is selling a faster EQE sedan version and liftback EQE. Work is well underway on a special electric architecture from Affalterbach that will be unveiled on an ICE-less sports car by the middle of this decade. As a taste of what’s to come, the Vision AMG concept will open on Thursday, May 19.

It’s too early to say for sure, but we’re under the impression that the AMG Vision will serve as a sportier interpretation of the Vision EQXX. While that one is considered the king of efficiency achieved thanks to the ultra-low coefficient of 0.17 drag, the new concept will focus on performance. It will obviously be shorter than the previous EV and should carry a more aggressive body in keeping with the AMG ethos.

We’ll remind you that the Vision EQXX has a relatively modest 201 horsepower produced by a rear-mounted electric motor. It’s unclear if a front e-motor will be added to the Vision AMG, but expect more of a punch from the sporty concept. The larger setup will significantly cut the seven-second sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) from the previous concept, which was limited to just 87 mph (140 km/h).

Everything will be revealed on May 19 when AMG will preview what’s available for the upcoming EV era. Mercedes’ performance arm has promised a “fully dedicated electric architecture from the ground up” and the concept could provide a window into the future of the halo car.
